Kampot has long been celebrated for its world-class pepper, its French colonial architecture, and the salt fields that shimmer under the tropical sun. However, in 2024, a new guardian took its place along the banks of the Preaek Tuek Chhu River, quickly becoming the city’s most photographed landmark: the Kampot Seahorse Statue.

Rising eight meters above the water in front of the Old Provincial Hall, this magnificent sculpture is not just a piece of art; it is a symbol of Kampot’s rebirth and its commitment to becoming a premier destination for international travelers.

A Design Inspired by Legend and Nature

The Seahorse was chosen as Kampot's mascot for several profound reasons. Historically, the coastal waters of Kampot province were home to diverse marine life, including various species of seahorses. In Khmer culture, the seahorse is often associated with patience, grace, and protection.

The statue itself is a masterclass in craftsmanship. It depicts a majestic seahorse with its tail curled around a pedestal, standing tall against the backdrop of the Bokor Mountain range. What sets this monument apart from others in Cambodia is its interactive element: at regular intervals, the seahorse spouts a powerful stream of water from its mouth into the river, reminiscent of the famous Merlion in Singapore.

The Riverside Experience

Visiting the Seahorse is about more than just a quick selfie. The area surrounding the statue has been meticulously redeveloped into a vibrant public space.

  • The Boardwalk: A new, wide promenade allows visitors to stroll comfortably along the river.
  • The Artificial Sand Beach: Located just a short walk away, the river beach offers a tropical feel where you can feel the sand between your toes while watching the fishing boats go by.
  • Nighttime Illumination: As the sun sets behind the mountains, the Seahorse truly comes to life. Integrated LED lighting bathes the statue in a rotating palette of colors - vibrant purples, deep blues, and golden yellows - making it a spectacular sight for evening photography.

Why the Seahorse Matters for Kampot Tourism

The installation of the Seahorse marks a strategic move by the Department of Kampot Tourism. By creating a modern, instagrammable landmark, the city has successfully bridged the gap between its sleepy, historical past and its future as a vibrant tourist hub.

For travelers, the Seahorse serves as the perfect starting point for exploring the city. From here, you are within walking distance of the Old Bridge (Entanou Bridge), the Durian Roundabout, and the city’s best riverside cafés.

Travel Tips for Visiting the Seahorse

  1. Best Time to Visit: Arrive around 5:30 PM. You can catch the Golden Hour light on the statue, watch the sunset over the river, and stay to see the colorful lights turn on at dusk.
  2. Photography: For the best shot, stand on the pier adjacent to the statue to capture the water spouting with the Bokor Mountain silhouette in the background.
  3. Local Snacks: Small vendors nearby sell fresh coconut water and local Khmer snacks - perfect for a sunset picnic on the nearby benches.
  4. Boat Tours: Many firefly and sunset cruises depart from the docks near the Seahorse, allowing you to see the statue from the water.
