Kamchay Dam is a very important place in southern Cambodia. It sits on the Kamchay River near the city of Kampot. This massive structure is a hydroelectric power station. It uses the power of falling water to make electricity for many homes and businesses.

Construction of this big project finished in the year 2011. Since then, it has become one of the largest power sources in the country. The dam can produce 193 megawatts of power. Every year, it generates about 900 million kilowatt-hours of clean energy. This energy travels through wires to help people in the surrounding province and beyond.

A Large Reservoir

The dam creates a giant lake called a reservoir. This reservoir can hold 110 million cubic meters of water. This water is vital for making power, especially during the different seasons in Cambodia. The view of the water against the green mountains is very impressive. Many people visit the area just to see the scale of the engineering.

Building the Dam

A company from China called China Guodian Corporation built the dam. The government of China provided a loan to pay for the work. Chinese engineers and workers lived in Kampot to finish the project. This is a great example of how different countries work together to build infrastructure.

Helping the Local Area

The Kamchay Dam brings many benefits to the local community.

  • Jobs: Many local people found work during the building phase. Today, people still work there to maintain the machines.
  • Reliable Power: Before the dam, electricity was not always steady. Now, the city of Kampot has a more reliable supply of light and power.
  • Economic Growth: With better electricity, local industries like tourism and farming can grow faster.

Nature and the Environment

Building a big dam can change the land. When the water rose to fill the reservoir, some villages had to move. More than 1000 families found new places to live. There were also concerns about fish in the river.

To help the fish, the engineers built a special fish ladder. This is a path that allows fish to swim past the dam. It helps the fish go up and down the river to find food and lay eggs. This helps keep the river healthy and protects the natural balance of the water.

Visiting Kamchay Dam

The dam is located about 10 kilometers away from Kampot town. It is an easy trip for anyone staying in the city. You can see the tall concrete wall and the vast water behind it. It shows how humans can use nature to create the energy we need for modern life.

Only local people have permission to bypass certain areas, so please respect all signs and staff when you visit. The area remains a key part of the future of Cambodia. It represents progress and the strength of the Kampot region.
